Broadcaster’s Glue - joining up the dots

The MEJ and JEM convert SDI to or from RGB or composite CVBS respectively, within a 21pin Scart plug.

Broadcast Project Research (BPR) have a varied portfolio of useful and innovative tools for broadcast and video professionals.

The little JEM takes a SDI signal and converts it to RGB or Composite CVBS within a Scart socket. By virtue of bypassing the TV’s processing and directly driving the video output stage, this allows the use of a Scart equipped TV for exceptional monitoring quality at low cost. SDI monitor gone down? Nip out and buy a TV to “get you going again!”

The MEJ offers the reverse function - taking RGB or Composite from a SCART socket and converting it to SDI. This is especially useful for the highest quality monitoring of the output from a VCR, DVD player or Satellite decoder. Versions are also available that embed or de-embed audio, named JAM and MAJ, and all of these products can also be purchased as modular BNC I/O blocks or with customised I/O options (flying BNC leads etc). Contact us for more information.

Finally, we also offer a miniature converter that inputs Y/C (separated Luma/Chroma) data via a S-Video cable and converts it to SDI. Especially useful for Camcorders.

smartlips set

An alternative cure for Lip Sync errors!

The “SmartLips Pack” contains a co-timed Flash and Blip generator that can be used to check for lip sync errors, especially in conjunction with the SmartLips combined Photometer, Sound meter and off-screen A/V sync meter. Additionally, the set contains a Test Signal DVD set. See the pdf (below) for more details.

Use the generator to record a few seconds (or establish a live feed) of video/audio from a measured distance, then use the Smartlips meter in the post production suite or control room to measure the time phase between each audio and video flash and blip instance. The simple meter display will tell you the phase (lead or lag) in ms, allowing fixed audio delays to be implemented per a given workflow, to ensure consistency. This can even be used to check differential video throughput latency between monitors - a critical unknown.

And now for something completely different

The “Flash Gordon,” was a ground breaking, real time legaliser that monitored SD video streams for the likelihood of inducing Photo Sensitive Epilepsy and corrected the output in compliance to known Broadcasting Standards. Click here for a pdf (91kB) reprint of a paper co-published by Dr John Emmett of BPR explaining PSE. Many hundreds are in use around the world. The original device is not available any more, but the new HD Gordon replacement is!. Ensure compliance in the brave new world of HD programme generation. Download the flyer here (pdf, 102kB) then call or e-mail for details.
