DSC Labs have an ever increasing range of specialised camera alignment charts to suit all applications in the movie and broadcast industry, and all budgets.
|

|
The most popular charts are the CamAlign ChromaDuMonde series. Each contains 11 step EIA crossed greyscales, peak white (100 IRE) and black chips, plus between 12 and 28 colours (including 4 useful standardized skin tones) and the option to add the unique Resolution Gratings. Simply pointing a camera at the chart and shooting a few seconds at the start of each scene or at each lighting change will give a straightforward reference for maintaining colorimetry through the rest of the production process.

Alternatively, use a chart, waveform and vectorscope to set a camera up to “best” technical colorimetry, and then modify the camera response to suit a particular “look.” Point the camera at the test chart again, and either save the resultant waveforms or take digital stills of the waveform and vectorscope screens to have a permanent record of your preferred set up for later matching.

The Billups VF/X has been designed by Scott Billups, working DP and author of one of the best books on shooting HD - Digital Moviemaking (just search for “Billups” on Amazon). Complementing the regular features such as crossed greyscales, resolution trumpets, 12 CDM colour chips and four typical “Fleshtones” are some innovative features designed to make life easier for a hardworking DoP:

The smoothly graded blue patch is designed to allow simple and speedy investigation into what process stage introduces banding type artefacts into sky, whilst on the opposite side of the chart are Digital Green and Blue - special effects chips from Composite Components plus Rosco's Chroma Key Green and Blue. The High Chroma slashes can be used for checking and tracking chroma aliasing through post and there are inch and centimetre scales top and bottom. Additionally, the two hemispherical reflectance spheres show the number, position and type of lighting, hue and colour filtration of individual lights (black sphere) whilst the white shows the integrated level and colour temperature.

With 4 saturation levels per colour you might be able to imagine the intricate “spider’s web” that the DreamCatcher chart creates on a vectorscope. But what that means as you adjust the matrix or output with a LUT is up to your imagination!! Still containing peak B/W patches, crossed greyscales and multiple framing lines, this chart was one of four new releases from DSC at NAB ‘08

Also new for 2008 was the amazing Colour Resolution chart - this will certainly sort the 4:4:4’s from the 3:1:1’s and the bayer single sensors from the 3-chip prism blocks!!!
No one who seriously wants to analyse a camera to death should be without one of these charts.

The charts are printed on aircraft grade aluminium, and colour-wise are so true you just wouldn’t believe! The glossy, encapsulating coating gives durability, increased contrast, reduces “invisible flare” (not seen by the naked eye, but most definitely seen by a camera) and the ability to simply wipe clean the chart even after smearing it with the “fast food fingerprints from hell !!”
