Intelligent Monitors and Display Device Controllers

Cinemage

Never again will you consider a monitor as merely a “dumb terminal” simply to be used for display.

Cine-tal has re-written the rules for HD Monitoring, by adding network capable intelligence, measurement, calibration and collaborative tools to Cinemáge, a ruggedized 1920 x 1200 pixel monitor that supports DVI, HD-SDI and Dual Link 4:4:4 inputs without so much as a blink!

At its heart is Cine-tal’s proprietary Intelligent Display Server (IDS) technology, which drives a host of production operations, .

including image processing, multi-camera monitoring, signal routing, frame grabs and colour pre-visualization. The monitor can also integrate an OmniTekTM test platform providing Waveform and Vectorscope functions that can be optionally enhanced right up to include HD Test Signal generation and world class 10 bit, 4:4:4 measurement, analysis and display. All frame rates are displayed at their native refresh rate, with all pixels mapped 1 for 1 with no scaling or image degradation.

Singing off the same colorimetry hymn sheet!
For cinema professionals, the Cinemáge
features full resolution, 24” HD monitoring with IDS, in a range of four models offering a variety of configurations for HD-SDI, DVI and HD Dual Link inputs and outputs. The monitors all support network integration, connecting via LAN, WAN, SAN or Wireless. Additionally the inclusion of an optional Colour Analyser photometer to a networked monitor that can arbitrarily capture frame grabs from live footage, allows colour calibration data to be embedded within the frame grabs which can then be transmitted to, and implemented by, another remote monitor anywhere in the world.

On set grading (Previsualisation)

Several customers and DoP’s are now using the Cinemáge for playback of instant, rough graded dailies. The standard workflow is defining itself as:
 - Network the monitor to a local PC (or MAC) with DVI-D out;
 - make framegrabs from the live camera or recorder feed;
 - these are automatically stored onto the hard drive of the computer;
 - switch the monitor to DVI mode, and open the grading system on the computer
  (SpeedGrade OnSet by Iridas is very popular);
 - grade one of the framegrabs using the monitor as a calibrated desktop, this automatically
  creates a 3D LUT that can be loaded and read by the monitor
 - switch the monitor back to the input feed - and invoke the 3D LUT directly from the PC;
 - rewind the tape, search back to the start of the take, and watch the shot with the LUT applied.
 - export the LUT to a USB memory stick, and use it as a reference starting point for the post
  production grading process

Network and Collaborate
Use the soft menu buttons, a pc, pda, or even a web enabled mobile phone, to control any of the monitor’s functions. Upload or download frame grabs for checking continuity or colorimetry either locally or remotely; save and recall waveform, vectorscope or gamut data; route signals; modify 3D LUT’s for primary colour grading pre-visualization then e-mail the rough grade back and forth; split the screen, view and colour match two or four cameras, or view a previously saved raw frame grab against a colour graded one sent back from a colorist.

Update Jan ‘07 - DVI input capability allows the monitor to switch between a calibrated desktop DVI mode and HD (or SD) -SDI inputs. SD or 720p inputs can be viewed as 1 for 1 pixel mapped images or scaled to fill the screen. Additional LUT support for external manufacturer equipment is also enabled within the new firmware. See full press release here
Update Sep ‘06 - full SD (PAL/NTSC via SDI) support with a scaler that enlarges SD images to fit the screen.
Update Jun ‘06 Support for Gamma and Density’s 3cP LUT’s is now incorporated into Cine-tal’s feature set.
Update Oct ‘05 - Cine-tal’s monitors now integrate seamlessly with SpeedGrade On-Set from Iridas - take a frame grab on the monitor, export it directly to a lap top running SpeedGrade, pull the colourimetry around to your heart’s content, then re-import the frame to the monitor with the modified look embedded.

The New, 1.5u rack mountable eL1000 from Cine-tal

Launched in September 2006 at IBC the new, rack mountable, external display processor and calibration control unit from
Cine-tal - the eL1000TM

eL1000 provides calibration and colour management for professional displays that support HD-SDI (single or dual link) and industrial or consumer displays that support DVI-D or HDMI.
The unit has 4 HD-SDI inputs and 2 HD-SDI outputs, that can be re-configured as 2 In 1 Out Dual Link connections. Additionally it has DVI-D In and Out, supporting 1920 x 1080 and 1920 x 1200 display resolutions.

In use the eL1000 offers a processing chain of up to 3 LUT’s - 1D input LUT’s for log/lin conversion (for example); a fully implemented 65 x 65 x 65 3D LUT for colour processing any of the 4 HD-SDI inputs, DVI-D input, framestore or test pattern generator; and finally independent 1D output LUTs (one per output) that allow individual profiling and colour management for any external display device.

Automatic profiling (white point, gamma curve, colour matching) is carried out by use of an optional GreyTag McBeth probe and the eL1000’s calibration software suite. However, manual profiling and calibration can be carried out using any measurement probe that provides x,y,Y CIE data.

The eL1000 also offers a split screen mode (for non destructive comparison of raw/LUT corrected images for example), range and gamut violation indication, a Test Signal Generator and a 30 frame internal still-store. It is fully networkable, with all controls, frame grabs, LUT’s and profiles accessible via any web browser enabled device, or (if preferred) via a dedicated mouse, keyboard and VGA monitor.
